“ The man who ran it [the Stanford prison experiment] (and cancelled it when he realised what was happening) is now an emeritus professor at Stanford. He wrote an article in my paper, last week or so, about how the behaviour of otherwise decent American and British soldiers in Iraq (and at Guantanamo) reflects what he had discovered and been horrified by. The article was (basically) saying: don’t necessarily blame the soldiers, who’re really not doing worse than being human - it really is the system that’s to blame.
